IBPS RRB Officer Scale-II Exam Pattern & Syllabus 2026: Complete Guide
The IBPS RRB Officer Scale-II examination is a single-stage online examination followed by an interview. Unlike Officer Scale-I, there is no preliminary examination for Scale-II. The exam pattern is different for General Banking Officer (GBO) and Specialist Cadre candidates.
For 2026, candidates should pay particular attention to the distinction between these two papers. The GBO examination consists of 200 questions for 200 marks, while the Specialist Cadre examination contains 240 questions for 200 marks because it includes a separate Professional Knowledge section. The latest official IBPS pattern also assigns separate timings to the sections.
Important: IBPS officially specifies the section-wise number of questions, marks and duration. It does not publish a fixed chapter-wise question quota. Therefore, the topic-wise weightage tables below are trend-based/expected weightage, compiled from recent exam analysis and should not be treated as an official IBPS distribution. Recent 2025 analysis, for example, showed 40-question Reasoning and Quantitative sections containing several 5-question sets and a 10-question arithmetic component.
IBPS RRB Officer Scale-II Exam Pattern 2026
Officer Scale-II recruitment is conducted through a single online objective examination. Candidates who qualify the prescribed online examination are shortlisted for the interview stage.
There are two different examination structures:
- Officer Scale-II General Banking Officer (GBO)
- Officer Scale-II Specialist Cadre
The two papers should not be confused because their marks distribution is different.
IBPS RRB Officer Scale-II GBO Exam Pattern 2026
The General Banking Officer paper has 200 questions carrying 200 marks. The total examination duration is 120 minutes.
| Section | Questions | Maximum Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reasoning | 40 | 50 | 30 minutes |
| Computer Knowledge | 40 | 20 | 15 minutes |
| Financial Awareness | 40 | 40 | 15 minutes |
| English/Hindi Language | 40 | 40 | 30 minutes |
| Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation | 40 | 50 | 30 minutes |
| Total | 200 | 200 | 120 minutes |
Candidates can choose English or Hindi for the language section. The other sections are available in English/Hindi as prescribed by IBPS. The official IBPS pattern specifies 40 questions each in all five sections, with Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude carrying 50 marks each.
GBO Section-Wise Weightage
| Section | Questions | Marks | Share of Total Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reasoning | 40 | 50 | 25% |
| Computer Knowledge | 40 | 20 | 10% |
| Financial Awareness | 40 | 40 | 20% |
| English/Hindi | 40 | 40 | 20% |
| Quantitative Aptitude & DI | 40 | 50 | 25% |
| Total | 200 | 200 | 100% |
This means Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude & DI together account for 50% of the total marks. Financial Awareness and Language contribute another 40%, while Computer Knowledge accounts for the remaining 10%.
IBPS RRB Officer Scale-II Specialist Cadre Exam Pattern
The Specialist Cadre examination has an additional Professional Knowledge section. Consequently, there are 240 questions, but the maximum marks remain 200.
| Section | Questions | Maximum Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Professional Knowledge | 40 | 40 | 30 minutes |
| Reasoning | 40 | 40 | 30 minutes |
| Financial Awareness | 40 | 40 | 15 minutes |
| English/Hindi Language | 40 | 20 | 30 minutes |
| Computer Knowledge | 40 | 20 | 15 minutes |
| Quantitative Aptitude & DI | 40 | 40 | 30 minutes |
| Total | 240 | 200 | 150 minutes |
The latest official IBPS examination structure gives Professional Knowledge, Reasoning, Financial Awareness and Quantitative Aptitude & DI 40 marks each, while Language and Computer Knowledge carry 20 marks each.
Specialist Cadre Weightage
| Section | Questions | Marks | Share of Total Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Professional Knowledge | 40 | 40 | 20% |
| Reasoning | 40 | 40 | 20% |
| Financial Awareness | 40 | 40 | 20% |
| English/Hindi | 40 | 20 | 10% |
| Computer Knowledge | 40 | 20 | 10% |
| Quantitative Aptitude & DI | 40 | 40 | 20% |
| Total | 240 | 200 | 100% |
The biggest difference is therefore straightforward: GBO has 200 questions/200 marks, whereas Specialist Cadre has 240 questions/200 marks.

Negative Marking in IBPS RRB Officer Scale-II
IBPS applies negative marking to objective questions.
For every incorrect answer, one-fourth (0.25) of the marks assigned to that question is deducted. There is no penalty for a question left unanswered. The official IBPS notification specifies this penalty for the objective examinations.
Because different questions can carry different marks, candidates should remember that the penalty is calculated against the marks assigned to that particular question.

IBPS RRB Scale-II Preparation Strategy
The Scale-II examination requires a slightly different approach from Scale-I because the paper is not merely an aptitude test. Financial awareness and banking knowledge become central to the preparation.
1. Build the Quant and Reasoning Base
Spend the first phase strengthening arithmetic, DI, puzzles and logical reasoning. These sections carry substantial marks in GBO.
2. Study Banking Awareness Every Day
Do not leave Financial Awareness for the final week. Study banking concepts alongside daily current affairs.
3. Give Special Attention to Rural Banking
RRB is not simply another banking examination. NABARD, rural credit, priority-sector lending, agriculture, financial inclusion and government schemes deserve dedicated preparation.
4. Prepare Current Affairs Strategically
Rather than reading every headline, concentrate on:
- Banking
- RBI
- Economy
- Finance
- Government schemes
- Appointments
- Reports and indices
- Important committees
- Digital payments
- International financial institutions
5. Treat Computer as a Scoring Section
Computer Knowledge carries only 20 marks in GBO, but those marks can be valuable because many questions are factual and directly preparable.
6. Practice With Sectional Timers
The latest official pattern allocates 30 minutes to Reasoning, 15 minutes to Computer, 15 minutes to Financial Awareness, 30 minutes to Language and 30 minutes to Quantitative Aptitude & DI for GBO.
That means candidates should practice under the same time structure instead of relying only on untimed question sets.
Suggested 60-Day IBPS RRB Scale-II Study Plan
| Phase | Duration | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 | Days 1–15 | Concepts + basic questions |
| Phase 2 | Days 16–30 | Advanced topics + banking awareness |
| Phase 3 | Days 31–45 | Sectional tests + current affairs |
| Phase 4 | Days 46–55 | Full-length mocks + revision |
| Phase 5 | Days 56–60 | Weak areas + current financial affairs |
A practical daily schedule could include:
- 90 minutes: Reasoning/Quant
- 60 minutes: Financial Awareness
- 45 minutes: Professional Knowledge, if applicable
- 30 minutes: Computer
- 30 minutes: English/Hindi
- 30 minutes: Current affairs/revision
Specialist candidates should increase the Professional Knowledge component substantially.
IBPS RRB Scale-II Exam Pattern vs Syllabus: What Matters Most?
One important distinction should be understood before preparation:
Exam pattern tells you how many marks are available. Syllabus tells you what you need to study. Weightage tells you where your preparation time is likely to produce the greatest return.
For GBO candidates, Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude & DI together account for 100 of 200 marks, while Financial Awareness contributes another 40. Therefore, these three areas deserve the largest share of preparation time.
For Specialist candidates, the Professional Knowledge section becomes equally important because it contributes 40 marks and tests the candidate’s specialist domain.
Recent 2025 Scale-II analysis reinforces this approach. The GBO paper was reported as moderate overall, with Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude & DI, Financial Awareness, English and Computer all appearing in the expected structure.
Frequently Asked Questions
| Is there a Prelims exam for IBPS RRB Officer Scale-II? |
|---|
| No. Officer Scale-II recruitment has a single online objective examination followed by an interview. Candidates do not appear for a preliminary examination. |
| How many questions are there in IBPS RRB Scale-II GBO? |
| The GBO examination contains 200 questions for 200 marks and is conducted for 120 minutes. |
| How many questions are there in IBPS RRB Scale-II Specialist? |
| The Specialist Cadre examination contains 240 questions for 200 marks and has a duration of 150 minutes. |
| What is the highest-weightage section in Scale-II GBO? |
| Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation each carry 50 marks, making them the highest-weightage individual sections. |
| Is Professional Knowledge compulsory for GBO? |
| No. Professional Knowledge is part of the Specialist Cadre examination, not the General Banking Officer paper. |
| Is Financial Awareness important for Scale-II? |
| Yes. It carries 40 marks in both GBO and Specialist Cadre, making it one of the most important sections. |
| Is there negative marking? |
| Yes. One-fourth of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for an incorrect answer. |
| Is the chapter-wise weightage officially released by IBPS? |
| No. IBPS officially releases the number of questions and marks for each section, but it does not guarantee a fixed number of questions from individual chapters. Therefore, chapter-wise weightage should be treated as a trend-based preparation guide, not an official blueprint. |
Final Preparation Takeaway
The IBPS RRB Officer Scale-II examination is a 200-mark single-stage examination for GBO candidates and a 240-question, 200-mark examination for Specialist Cadre candidates. The difference is primarily caused by the Professional Knowledge section in the Specialist paper.
For GBO, the preparation priority should be:
Reasoning → Quantitative Aptitude & DI → Financial Awareness → Language → Computer
For Specialist Cadre, the priority should be:
Professional Knowledge → Financial Awareness → Reasoning → Quantitative Aptitude & DI → Language/Computer
The biggest mistake would be to prepare Scale-II exactly like Scale-I. Scale-II demands greater emphasis on banking, finance, current affairs and professional/domain knowledge, while the aptitude sections still require substantial practice.
Recent examination analysis also shows that the paper can move beyond predictable textbook questions. Financial Awareness, for example, has included contemporary RBI decisions, banking regulations, government schemes, payment systems and financial institutions.
So, the winning preparation formula is fairly simple: build concepts, track banking current affairs, practice high-weightage topics, take timed mocks and revise relentlessly. The syllabus may look like a large cupboard, but you do not need to empty every shelf at once. Start with the sections carrying the most marks and build outward from there.
