The Screening Test is objective in nature and consists of two papers, while the Main Examination is descriptive and includes five merit-ranking papers along with qualifying Telugu and English papers.

For candidates preparing for the APPSC Group-I Services Recruitment 2026, understanding the syllabus is just as important as knowing the examination pattern. The Mains examination goes considerably deeper, testing analytical writing, essay writing, constitutional knowledge, governance, economy, science and technology, environment, history and geography.

APPSC Group-I Exam Pattern 2026: Overview

The APPSC Group-I examination has three stages:

  1. Screening Test
  2. Main Written Examination
  3. Personality Test/Interview

The Screening Test is used for shortlisting candidates for the Main Examination. Its marks are not added to the final merit.

The Main Examination consists of two qualifying language papers and five merit-ranking papers. The five merit papers carry 750 marks, while the Personality Test carries 75 marks. Therefore, the final merit component is based on 825 marks.

APPSC Group-I Prelims Exam Pattern 2026

The Preliminary examination is officially referred to as the Screening Test.

It consists of two objective-type papers:

  • Paper-I: General Studies
  • Paper-II: General Aptitude

Each paper contains 120 questions, carries 120 marks, and has a duration of 120 minutes. Therefore, the complete Screening Test carries 240 marks and provides candidates with four hours of examination time across the two papers.

Paper-IIGeneral Aptitude120120120 minutes
Total240240240 minutes

The Screening Test is objective in nature and is conducted in OMR-based mode as prescribed for the recruitment.

APPSC Group-I Prelims Negative Marking

Candidates must be particularly careful about guessing in the Screening Test.

For every incorrect answer, one-third of the marks prescribed for that question is deducted. This negative-marking provision is linked to the relevant Andhra Pradesh government examination rules and is specified in the Group-I scheme.

Since each question carries one mark, an incorrect response generally results in a deduction of approximately 0.33 mark.

For example:

  • Correct answer = +1 mark
  • Wrong answer = -1/3 mark
  • Unanswered question = No marks

The negative-marking system makes accuracy extremely important. Candidates should therefore avoid turning the Screening Test into a guessing competition.

APPSC Group-I Medium of Mains Examination

The five merit-ranking Main papers may be answered in the prescribed English, Telugu or Urdu medium, subject to the candidate’s choice and the Commission’s conditions.

A candidate must maintain the selected medium consistently across the applicable papers. Candidates should therefore choose their examination medium carefully rather than switching languages paper by paper.

The Telugu and English qualifying papers naturally have their respective language requirements.

APPSC Group-I Prelims vs Mains

Understanding the difference between the two stages can make preparation much more efficient.

The preparation strategy should therefore change after the Screening Test. A candidate who prepares only through MCQs may struggle badly when confronted with descriptive answer writing.

How to Prepare for APPSC Group-I Prelims

1. Start with the Official Syllabus

The syllabus should be your master checklist.

Do not study randomly from multiple books before understanding what APPSC actually asks. The Commission’s official Group-I syllabus page provides the Preliminary and Mains syllabus resources.

2. Give Special Importance to Andhra Pradesh

APPSC is not a generic national examination.

Prepare Andhra Pradesh-specific:

  • History
  • Culture
  • Geography
  • Economy
  • Polity
  • Government schemes
  • Current affairs
  • Bifurcation issues
  • Development programmes

3. Build a Current Affairs System

Instead of reading every news story, organise current affairs into categories:

AP → India → World → Economy → Science & Technology → Environment → Governance → Awards → Sports

This makes revision much easier.

4. Practise Negative Marking

Do not attempt every question blindly.

A good mock-test strategy should teach you three categories:

  • Certain answer
  • Probable answer
  • Pure guess

Your target should be maximum accuracy, not maximum attempts at any cost.

How to Prepare for APPSC Group-I Mains

Mains preparation should ideally begin alongside Prelims preparation.

Develop Answer-Writing Skills

A good answer should contain:

  • Direct introduction
  • Relevant facts
  • Clear arguments
  • Examples
  • Andhra Pradesh perspective where relevant
  • Government initiatives
  • Challenges
  • Solutions
  • Balanced conclusion

For a 10-mark question, do not write a five-page essay. For a 15-mark analytical question, do not submit five bullet points and hope the examiner fills in the gaps.

Use Current Affairs in Static Answers

Suppose the question concerns federalism.

A basic answer may discuss:

  • Legislative relations
  • Administrative relations
  • Financial relations

A stronger answer can connect those concepts with contemporary Centre-State issues, cooperative federalism and fiscal relations.

That is the transition from memorization to analysis, which is central to Mains preparation.

APPSC Group-I Preparation Strategy: Subject-Wise

History and Culture

Use a chronological timeline.

Study Indian and Andhra Pradesh history together wherever possible.

Polity

Understand constitutional provisions instead of memorizing article numbers in isolation.

Economy

Follow the latest Union Budget, Andhra Pradesh Budget and relevant economic surveys.

Geography

Use maps regularly. River systems, irrigation projects, ports, minerals and physical geography become much easier when visualized.

Science and Technology

Combine static science with current affairs.

Environment

Link environmental concepts with current developments, legislation, climate change and disaster management.

Essay

Write regularly. Reading essays alone does not teach you to write them.

Telugu and English

Practice qualifying papers early so that they do not become a last-minute obstacle.

Common Mistakes in APPSC Group-I Preparation

Ignoring Andhra Pradesh-Specific Topics

One of the biggest mistakes is preparing only from national-level UPSC-style material.

APPSC requires significant state-specific preparation.

Treating Prelims as the Entire Examination

Clearing the Screening Test is only the doorway to Mains.

Delaying Answer Writing

Candidates often wait until after Prelims to begin writing practice. That can leave too little time to develop speed and structure.

Ignoring Current Affairs

Static knowledge alone is insufficient for an examination that explicitly includes current events and contemporary issues.

Overusing Guesswork

The one-third negative marking makes careless guessing expensive.

Neglecting Language Papers

Although Telugu and English are qualifying, failure to meet the prescribed standard can end a candidate’s journey despite strong marks elsewhere.

Best Way to Use Previous APPSC Group-I Papers

Previous-year question papers are one of the most useful preparation resources.

APPSC maintains an official archive containing Group-I Screening and Mains question papers from previous recruitment cycles. The Commission’s question-paper page includes Group-I papers and Mains papers from multiple notifications.

Candidates should use previous papers to identify:

  • Frequently tested areas
  • Question difficulty
  • Andhra Pradesh-specific emphasis
  • Repeated themes
  • Mains answer expectations
  • Current-affairs integration
  • Time-management requirements

Do not merely solve previous papers and check the score.

Study why the question was asked.

The Screening Test rewards breadth, speed, factual recall, reasoning and accuracy. The Main Examination rewards depth, analysis, structured writing, current-affairs awareness and the ability to connect concepts with real administrative issues.

Candidates should therefore avoid preparing for both stages in exactly the same way.

For Prelims, build a wide knowledge base and practise objective questions under the pressure of negative marking. For Mains, gradually develop answer-writing speed, essay structure and analytical thinking. At every stage, keep Andhra Pradesh-specific content at the centre of your preparation.

The official APPSC website provides the current recruitment notifications as well as the Group-I syllabus resources. Candidates should always cross-check the latest Commission notice before relying on any change in examination scheme, dates or instructions.
